When it comes time for a home improvement project or a spring cleaning, what is the better option for disposing of junk and waste: dumpster rentals or a trip to the junkyard? A dumpster rental is convenient but has an up-front price tag that can seem intimidating. However, is it really more cost-effective to take a trip to a waste disposal facility when you factor in gas, time, travel, and the weight of the waste? Here are a few pros and cons to consider as you make your decision.

PROS

Flat Rate

The biggest advantage of renting a dumpster is the weekly flat rate, especially if you suspect you'll be generating a large amount of waste during a remodel or home renovation project. Most junkyards and waste disposal services charge to dispose of your junk by weight when you haul it yourself. When you're only disposing of a small amount requiring only one short trip, that may not be a problem. But if you suspect you'll have a large amount of waste or heavy waste, it's usually better to go with one flat rate rental price.

Convenience

When you rent a dumpster, it will be delivered to your desired location by truck and then removed for disposal. That means you won't be responsible for disposal and can focus on your project. This is especially convenient if you don't have access to a truck or trailer.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

One major benefit of renting a dumpster is that you'll have a place to immediately dispose of junk and get it out of the way of your project rather than creating piles that require removal before you can continue. It can help alleviate stress during a high-stakes project.

CONS

Cost

For small projects where you're only disposing of a small amount of waste, especially a load that doesn't weigh much, it's probably more cost-effective to take one trip to the junkyard. It's really a matter of doing your homework. You'll need to take a close look at your project and make an educated guess. Keep in mind that for a 20-yard dumpster—the most common size—you can expect to pay between $350-$400 per week.

Can Add Up

It can be disadvantageous to rent a dumpster if you are uncertain of your time frame. Since most dumpster rental companies rent by the week, you will have to pay for another week if you don't get all the waste into the container on time.
